Natalie sometimes laughs at me when I claim not to direct my portrait subjects, but I can state definitely that this sort of work does not result from telling people what to do.
Over-directing a portrait does not bring out relaxed, natural, normal expressiveness. It rarely results in good composition, either. People naturally compose themselves well; what we have seen for thousands of generations has come to be defined by our neural networks as good composition. When we do not see good composition, it is because an over-directing portraitist has interfered. |

I'm always knocked out when I find a picture like this in my contact sheets. I love the combination of good technical qualities of the negative, good composition, and expressiveness of each of several subjects. The probability of getting all these factors lined up simultaneously is remote, and it only comes along a few times in who knows how many rolls of film. I made 20x24 prints of Naughty Nana recently. I knew I'd get good ones right away, so I made big ones. I haven't made a numbered edition yet. I plan to do that in the near future, but these first few prints are extremely beautiful and charming. They are made on a warmtone fiber base material, and selenium toned for long print lifespan. These are prints by Lloyd Erlick. I make them myself, by hand.
